We are an arts organization dedicated to developing and supporting both new and experienced playwrights who tell stories
of the African diaspora in the Americas,
as well as those from other traditionally marginalized communities.
To continue providing artistic,
developmental support for playwrights
rooted in the Afro-American diaspora,
and artists who are shaping the theater
of the 21st century and beyond.
Morgan Freeman, Billie Allen Henderson, Clayton Riley, and Garland Lee Thompson founded our Obie, and Audelco Award winning, nonprofit in 1973 in the crucible of the American Black Arts Movement.
Since 2016 FSWW has been in residence at, and working with, the Billie Holiday Theatre in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, home of the largest
Afro-American community
in the United States.
Our new play readings and moderated critique sessions
are live on Zoom. To see past
readings go to the official
FSWW Youtube channel.
All readings in 2023-2025 are a part of our ongoing 50th anniversary celebration.
Frank Alvin Silvera was a Jamaican-born American character actor and theatrical director. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, raised in Boston during the 1930s and '40s, he worked in numerous stage productions on and off-Broadway, and radio shows. Making his film debut in 1952, he founded the THEATRE OF BEING, a company for Black actors, in 1965. Our thanks to award-winning director and producer Neema Barnette and BLACK HISTORY MINI DOCS
for this wonderful portrait of Frank.
Thank you so much! Your donations help us to continue supporting playwrights, actors, and directors.
